“Bouclé” is French for “buckled” which is an accurate description for this type of yarn, where the technique causes the fibre to bend back on itself resulting in a series of loops and circles in the finished yarn. In this workshop, we will discuss the basic recipe for creating Bouclé and will explore how the 3 components of a bouclé (core, wrapper, binder) interact. Participants will get a chance to play with variations in core and wrapping yarn/fibre to see how they affect the final appearance of the yarn. Plan on doing at least 2 samples: one with Mohair, and another with wool. We will play with as many variations as time allows.

Equipment to Bring:

  • Spinning wheel
  • 3 bobbins
  • Scissors
  • 1 Mug, bowl or basket to put a spool of thread in
  • 2 Lazy Kates, or DIY equivalents that allow you to put a bobbin on either side of your chair.
  • Niddy noddy

Materials to Bring:

  • 2-3 spools of strong Thread to be used as a core/binder. Your choice in colours. (This can silk, upholstery, or machine embroidery thread, etc. It just has to be STRONG. If you can snap it easily between your hands, it’s a poor choice.)

Fibres to Bring*

  • 25-50g of Mohair / mohair blend combed top
  • 25g (or more) of a coarser Long wool combed top ( Ex. Gotland, Teeswater, Perendale, Romney, Cotswald, etc.)
  • 25g (or more) of Merino wool top
  • Any other wool/fibre you may want to try as a looping ply

*Please note that the amount of fibre needed / used will vary depending on the thickness of yarns spun and the amounts listed above are meant as guidelines. Participants may want to bring more fibre incase they choose to spin thicker yarns, or want to make more samples.

Max number participants: 8

Cost: $6

Coffee and tea will be available on site, but please remember to bring your lunch.
